Are you a Boomer, Zoomer or Quasar?
We all know who the Boomers (b. 1946-1964) are-they have long influenced the cultural, financial and societal norms of America. Think Women’s Movement, the Dot.com miracle/bust, the cultural revolution of the 60’s, the Pill and going to the Moon!
Boomers are not slowing down even though the first in their ranks hit the age of social security and retirement (65) last year. They remain powerful consumers, are delaying retirement and still have a strong influence on our youth driven culture.
At this age, many Boomers are noticing the effect of poor eating habits, little exercise in the fast-action, stressful lives they have been living. Finally, in retirement they have the “time” to exercise. But they realize “I HATE TO EXERCISE” which is the real reason why they haven’t been doing it all these years!
Let’s talk ZOOMERS! A new word from the West Coast fitness industry, Zoomers are Boomers who LOVE to exercise. What is a Zoomer? How about my neighbor, a 59 year old retired physician who just came back from an Uzbekistan Marathon for Seniors that was run in the mountains at 14,000 feet! I’m breathing hard just writing this. Zoomers are those skinny, beautiful, and very young- looking Yoga people you see, especially in the Celebrity set. Ah, heck, even Madonna turned 52 this year! Zoomers made keeping fit a priority all their lives and it shows in their health histories! The exercise needs of Zoomers and Boomers are very different, and the Fitness World is starting to recognize this.
Quasars are folks age 70 and better who want to stay fit and reap the benefits of exercise forever! Ancient Quasars are the most luminous, powerful and energetic objects in the Universe. Our human “Quasars” aren’t ancient, they ARE older with special movement needs. The Quasars are filled with a luminosity, a power and an energy that most never see. In our youth culture, the Quasar Seniors often become invisible. Quasars who are out moving their bodies, sharpening their minds, staying visible and connecting with Spirit are living longer, healthier and happier lives. Not everyone is using a walker or wheelchair.
If you’re a Zoomer, keep doing what you’re doing! If you’re a Boomer just coming back to exercise, take it easy, get your Doctor’s permission and start with just 10 minutes a day of walking. Build that into 30 minutes a day. Walking is the best “intro” exercise. Walk the dog or join a walking group. Hate the “gym”? Look into the new fitness programs especially for ages 50 and better. Programs like ZENgevity, Nia, Zumba Gold or Silver Sneakers are great for Boomers, Zoomers or Quasars. ZENgevity is for any age, shape, size or ability.
If you’re a Quasar, contact your local Council on Aging or YMCA and see what special exercise programs they offer. Go, you’re beautiful! Be good to yourself! Meet new friends! Just move your Body! Move for Life!
