Procrastination is just another word for guessing. “What shall I do today?”, “which project shall I work on first?”, “maybe I should do the laundry?” or “maybe I should just go back to bed”. We spin in stress circles when we are without clearly defined goals. When we first meet, many of my Coaching clients do not write their goals down. Part of the Coaching is finding out what holds the person back from reaching their goals. This is often as complicated as the person and we are ALL complex people. In Coaching, we always start with getting clearly defined goals, intentions and then setting actions. There is something magical about getting our goals out of our heads and down on paper or laptop. I prefer paper, laptop and iPad. All the bases covered, I guess (not that I ever suffer from guess stress).
When I start guessing, I always ask myself “What’s holding me back, what’s getting in the way of this task? What is the “little voice inside my head” saying about the task? Usually, it’s some fear or a sense of overwhelm.
Have you ever heard these voices?
“I’m not smart enough”.
“I don’t know enough about business
“What would my kids (parents, partner) say”?
“I have too many ideas”.
“Is this a shiny object”?
“I’m too fat”.
“I’m too skinny”.
“What if I fail”?
“What if I succeed”?
“What if I am rejected”?
“What if I am too old”?
“What if I am too young”?
We all suffer fears and doubts (guessing). When we can identify, get conscious of the fear, the voice and acknowledge it, it usually eases and then we can call up the voices of courage and confidence. Those fears and doubts will float away allowing us to complete and celebrate our goals.
