To diet or not to diet?
Many ask me, “What about diet?” I believe diet has become a four letter word. You can’t sit down to eat with friends without someone asking, “How many calories in that?”, “Is this a healthy food?” or “Are YOU dieting?” Or they say, “I know its junk food but, I love it”, “I wish I could eat that” or “I have to lose weight”. There is most always a form of shame and questioning attached to what we eat. We are bombarded by advertising of all kinds centered on food and junk food, dieting and healthy eating. We ALL have to eat, that’s a given. What we eat depends on us.
In America, we have a well fed society. And, I mean that figuratively as well as literally. Obesity costs the US $147 BILLION dollars annually for Health care. There are many, many factors that contribute to weight gain and obesity. From fast food to genetics, to lack of exercise and restaurant gorging it’s easy to gain weight in America.
We know that obesity contributes to heart disease, strokes, Type 2 Diabetes and certain cancers. The CDC reports that more than a third (35.7%) adult Americans are obese and 17% of children/adolescents are obese. That’s scary!
Everyone has heard the moniker “You are what you eat.” True, AND, you are what you think, what you feel. We need to take in more than less food. A whole body approach of mind, body, emotion, spirit and energy is needed, not just a diet. We need a lifestyle program. I will be writing more about eating, dieting and lifestyle plans this week.
Notice if you are attaching shame to your eating. What thoughts go through your mind as you eat? Share with us in the Comments below.
